This combined food and archaeological tour takes you 40 metres into the dark underworld of Naples where you will explore the ancient labyrinth of caves, aqueducts, cisterns and passageways. The underground system in Naples was excavated originally by the Greeks who extracted the “tufa” rock for construction purposes whilst simultaneously increasing and regulating the water supply from Mount Vesuvius.
The underground system of channels and cisterns was expanded and improved by the Romans and during WWII was used as a bomb shelter by the people of Naples.
Having spent time underground our tour continues with the tasting of some of Naples’ famous food specialities: Baccalà, Fiarielli, local Soups and Ragù served with the famous Aglianico wine. You will take a stroll with us to one of the most well-known and picturesque districts of Naples: the Quartieri Spagnoli (Spanish Quarters).
Me and my husband stayed in Naples two days and from there we visited Pompeii and Amalfi. However, the food tour in Naples was my favorite experience in the area. Lots of great food and wine, thank you guys for making our holidays memorable. Elizabeth M., Scranton, USA
This district is a hive of activity. Here we will sample the famous pastiera napoletana, pasta papate e provola cheese and the genovese, a delicious sauce invented at the court of the king of Naples by chefs from Genoa.
The tour will then take you to one of Naples’ most visited temples, the opulent sanctuary of Santa Francesca delle Cinque Piaghe – visited throughout the centuries by girls wishing to become pregnant!
This tour is not for the claustrophobic – in part we meander by candlelight through very narrow passageways. However, it is an experience, not to be missed.
